Dear readers,
“Ruth Mutzafi turns on the light but the room remains murky...”
My new story, “Shelter,” follows Ruth Mutzafi, one of the swimmers from my previous story, “Cold Water,” back to her home—which is far from safe, in more than one way.
I’m hoping to expand these into a series of interconnected stories that offer snapshots of our lives post-October 7. I’m grateful to the Jewish Book Council for providing a platform for them.
I’d like to welcome all the new subscribers to my newsletter! And I’d like to thank the readers who have made pledges to pay an annual fee for it. At this point, I don’t have nearly enough subscribers to justify putting out a regular newsletter with content worth paying for, but it’s gratifying to know that you think I ought to do that.
In lieu of paying me, please consider making a donation to the Niot Project, which helps teenagers with learning difficulties. Many of the schools these young people attend remain closed or only open for limited hours because of the war, and our staff has been working intensively to provide them with support and assistance.
The project, which we set up together with our partners at the Society for the Advancement of Education, Jerusalem, is a monument to our younger son, Niot. We lost him twelve and a half years ago, when he had a diving accident during his army service.
Wishing us all a peaceful week,
Haim
